Recently I was “playing” a bit with Windows Server 2008 R2 Core VMware Tools and Virtual Hardware upgrade from version 3.5 to 4.1. Migration went fine from one environment to another, but the rest went totally wrong. I got immediately BSOD - Blue Screen Of Death.
My patient was Windows Server 2008 R2 Core Active Directory domain controller with database on separate disk.
Today I was working on problem related to VMware Update Manager pointing to wrong database and I managed to find the solution to this problem.
In my case SQL server was running on Windows Server 2008 R2 so I had to check 32 bit DSN located in %SystemRoot%\syswow64\odbcad32.exe
Of course DSN was pointing to correct database on correct DB server but VUM was still not working. Also it is important to mention that two days before vCenter Server was migrated from one host to another with vCenter Server version upgrade. I knew previous SQL database names so I knew what I was looking for. On new SQL server I created new databases - the one which was VUM referring to.

Recently I found that on my VPS server there is incorrect time often called time drift. As you know having correct time is very important - especially in Active Directory environments. Back to my case - I have VPS running on XEN and I reported to hosting company this issue. They replied that they will not change ntp settings for hosts but they said that I can do it by myself.
So encouraged by them (of course by not solving my ticket at all) I did small digging and I found this solution.
